The University's Research Information website provides information about various systems and technologies used for reporting and measuring research impact:

  • Altmetric - Altmetric is a system that tracks the attention that scholarly articles and datasets receive online, over and above traditional academic citation counts and Impact Factors.
  • Open Access - Open access to research publications involves making them freely available online rather than charging readers to read and use them. Open Access to research data makes data more widely available for re-use by others to support research, innovation and wider public use. Login to Elements to upload your papers and make them Open Access. The Open Access Team will check your funder and journal policies and advise on how to comply with REF and other funder Open Access requirements. If you have already sent your paper to the Open Access Team you don't need to do it again. More information is available from the Open Access Team: https://www.openaccess.cam.ac.uk/
  • ORCiD (Open Researcher and Contributor iD) - was launched in 2012 as a free-to-use registry to provide researchers with unique persistent identifiers (ORCiD iDs). It aims to make a huge difference to a researcher’s ability to gain full credit for their work and provide a useful tool for universities as they track, evaluate and report research work.
  • Researchfish - is an online facility which aims to help research funders track the impacts of their investments, and researchers to record the outcomes of their work.  Researchfish was adopted in 2013 as the Research Councils' harmonised research outcomes collection system from September 2014, and the system is also used by over 70 other funders. The Researchfish system also offers a range of functions which aim to enable institutions to support their researchers in returning information to the Research Councils.
  • Symplectic Elements -is the University's research information management system within which Cambridge researchers can create a profile and share information within the University of Cambridge community. Originally implemented to help with the management of submissions to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, Elements is now the linchpin of research information management across the University, connecting, synchronising and collating information from a wide range of platforms. A Symplectic account is automatically created for each research staff members when they join the University and can be accessed via the Raven login system. Through Symplectic staff can access material from a growing list of data sources including EuropePubMedCentral, Scopus and WebofScience,arXiv, as well as the alternative metrics of Altmetric, and searchable grant data through Dimensions. Staff can also link their Elements account to an ORCiD id if they wish to share information with people beyond the University of Cambridge community. Elements is also essential for generating a variety of departmental reports, it is therefore crucial that staff members ensure their profiles are kept up to date.
