New Starters

The Department of Oncology is an academic department that sits within the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge. 

To help welcome our new staff members, the Department of Oncology, School of Clinical Medicine and the University all provide a variety of information and induction events. 

To access this information please click on the headings below:


The Department of Oncology provides all new staff members with an individual induction programme to welcome them into their role.

New employees are encouraged to take an active role in ensuring that their induction programme meets their needs effectively.

At the end of the induction programme, a new starter should:

  • have met their key colleagues
  • be able to find their way around their new workplace
  • be aware of their local policies and procedures, e.g. for health and safety, IT, etc.
  • have a clear understanding of the requirements and expectations of their role
  • have identified any training and development needs in order for them to carry out their role
  • have been given information about the School and University to allow them to understand the context of the department
  • know what is expected of them and the way in which their work will be monitored
  • understand their terms and conditions of employment.

School of Clinical Medicine

The School of Clinical Medicine provides the following for new starters:

  • welcome new employees into the School of Clinical Medicine
  • provide an informal introduction for new employees to their new environment
  •  bring all the new starters within the School together within a few months of them starting
  •  provide an opportunity for new employees to meet each other

Welcome to Cambridge is an induction event for all new University staff, hosted by the Personal and Professional Development team to:

  • welcome new members of staff
  • identify key characteristics of the University's cultures, processes and values
  • provide an opportunity to ask questions
  • provide an opportunity to network with colleagues
  • provide an opportunity to learn about the range of facilities and support services offered by the University
